Synapse
“Synapse” is a working model of a “Neural Connection”, how communication happens between two neurons. There is a space between the ends of the neurons called the synaptic cleft. To communicate, neurotransmitters are sent through that gap from one neuron to the other. The neurotransmitters are all different shapes and attach to correspondingly shaped neuroreceptors. The eight major neurotransmitters that affect mood, calming, learning, pleasure, fight/flight, concentration, memory and euphoria are represented in this piece.
Each “neurotransmitter” can be lowered, raised and spun around by using the attached rods. Once the transmitter shape is spun and aligned with the receptor shape, it can be pushed through and used to affect the layer of glass beyond. (as a little bonus, If enough of the glass is ground down into finer particles, they will settle into the grooves on the bottom board and reveal a secret message there)
The aesthetic is reminiscent of some kind of old medical device of sorts. The function is a nod to the fact that so many medical procedures are affecting something iINSIDE the body by manipulating something OUTSIDE the body. Like using a joystick and monitor to guide a stint into place for example. The slow and steady nature of the skill involved to line up the shapes to their receptors calls to mind the old board game “operation”, except with no annoying buzzer.
SELF CONTAINED, INDOOR: includes a section of door frame incorporated into the base of the piece so it can be displayed anywhere indoors - no doorway needed.
FREE STANDING: to be displayed on a table, shelf or pedestal.
DIMENSIONS: 11-13” tall, 5.5” width, 10.5” length
NOTE: Includes Kosher hand-scribed mezuzah scroll (Klaf)
